Job Description

Financial Analyst, Expense management
This is a 1 year contract to start, location is Waterloo.

The Investments Expense Management Team is responsible for monitoring the Investment Division's operating expenses and to provide management with analysis and insights on operating expense trends. The team is also responsible for leading the annual expense planning and budgeting process and for the allocation of expenses across Investments to Canadian and US business groups, and 3rd party businesses.

Major Responsibilities:

Planning and Forecasting:

  • Provide analysis of key expense trends to support divisional expense reporting
  • Prepare supporting analysis to provide insights required to develop  investment expense related assumptions for the annual actuarial reserves setting process
  • Prepare monthly expense forecasts to support management decision making

Expense Management Reporting and Analysis

  • Provide support for the preparation of quarterly reporting on key expense metrics, expense roll forwards, productivity savings, Controllable and Contractual Volume expenses
  • Quarterly consolidated expense forecasting and reporting to support external and internal financial and management information
  • Prepare analysis and detailed supporting information to develop monthly budget variance reporting for Corporate
  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly management reporting packages to communicate expense result

Allocation models for investment expenses

  • Accountable for the monthly expense allocation process for Investment expenses
  • Analysis of allocations across business groups to ensure accuracy and reasonableness of allocations
  • Support an initiative to review, propose and ultimately implement a new automated allocation process, considering potential system enhancements and client requirements  

 

Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong interpersonal , influencing and team work activity
  • Attention to detail at multiple layers in expense management framework
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft office 
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills to facilitate prioritizing among competing priorities
  • Experience with Business Unit or Business Group financial and expense management including finance and actuarial linkages would be preferable

Education and Experience:

  • CPA,CA, CGA, CMA with 5+ years of Insurance and/or Financial Services industry
  • Business Unit and Business Group background including working with Actuarial partners would be beneficial
  • Understanding of investments and differing asset classes would be beneficial
